SUMMARY SECTION:

The purpose of combining the antenna with this adapter is to protect the RP-MMCX jack on an SMC or Zcomax wireless cards, against wear and damage. See list of compatible cards.

SMC & Zcomax (and other) wireless cards have an "RP-MMCX" antenna jack which fits an RP-MMCX connector, such as the RP-MMCX connector on this adapter. RP-MMCX jacks and connectors are vulnerable to damage, because of their small size, and so they need protection. Every time the RP-MMCX connector is removed from the jack, or plugged into the jack, a small amount of damage is caused to the jack and to the connector.

Any amount of pulling or tugging at a cable with an RP-MMCX connector will cause damage to the jack and to the connector. An RP-MMCX connector will actually break after a lot of plugging in, pulling out, and the strain from the cable being tugged in day to day use.

The RP-MMCX to RP-SMA adapter may be permanently attached to the wireless card, by use of Velcro, silicon bonding cement, or a cable tie. You can then attach the antenna with an RP-SMA (female) connector - and you can remove and attach this connector as often as you wish without causing any damage. Pulling & tugging on the cable, as occurs with ordinary usage, will no longer threaten or ruin your SMC and Zcomax wireless card's jack.

The RP-SMA connector is about 5x larger than an RP-MMCX connector (1 CM vs. 2mm, respectively). Further, the RP-SMA connector is threaded so that it has much, much higher resiliency against wear.

Other benefits:

* Much less loss of gain with the RP-SMA because of the threaded connection and the lack of wear.

* Extension cable can be added or removed from the assembly, as needed

Extension cables available: 1 to 6 meters in my e-store.

The cable of this antenna and adapter is LMR100A, which is low-loss cable of much higher quality than the black pigtail cables, which are RG174. LMR100A is about 5x the cost and quality of RG174. The higher

quality of the cable of this antenna translates into lower loss/better performance.
